Ultrasonic Testing
Ultrasonic testing is a method for detecting internal imperfections in materials by passing ultrasonic vibrations through the material. Ultrasonic testers are also used as the most convenient means of measuring wall thickness.
Ultrasonic tests can be conducted for example on the following:
a) All types of shafts
b) Mill shells/liners and corrosive material
c) Wall thickness

"A variety of NDT methods may be employed to assess the condition of an item to supplement the standard visual examination".
Inspection Techniques (for both external and internal examinations) consists of:
1) Liquid penetration- Is used to indicate the presence and extend, but the depth of imperfections, on the surface of metals by using either penetrating dyes developed by powder or fluorescent type dyes so that the cracks are visible.
2) Magnetic Particle- is used for showing up surface imperfections, usually cracks and other elongated surface discontinuities, in ferro-magnetic materials only. A magnetic field is set up, the discontinuity being indicated by use of magnetic ink containing finely divided iron powder.
3) Radio Graphic Testing-is used to detect internal imperfections in a material by passing of X or Gamma rays through the material and allowing the rays to fall onto a radiographic film. Use of lead numbers and letters allows the information required for the work to be recorded on film, which is retained as permanent record on film for future reference.
Non destructive testing can be conducted on the following:
A) All type of shafts and structures
B) Chairlift stands, brackets, seats and braking system.
C) Chains
D) Lifting hooks
E) Shackles
F) Mobile equipment e.g Forklift's, Manitou's, Truck mounted Cranes, TLB's, Mobile Cranes, Scissor lift's.
